All the domestic dogs in the world belong to one breed of animal called the domestic dog (Latin: Canis lupus familiaris), which are animals that have a very close relationship with humans, today there are about four hundred breeds of dogs on Earth, but they all come from the same species with different forms and variety of functions, from guard and hunting dogs to ornamental dogs. These animals have a very strong sense of smell that helps them track people and other animals, and they have many habits of their own; they tend to bury bones or toys that they like to reuse in the future, and they are also interested in identifying areas for them around their homes and defending them from other dogs. Dogs use many sounds to communicate, including barking and others.
The dog has helped Man in many jobs since the dawn of civilization, and the dog is considered a kind of pet that familiarizes its owner if he loves him, and serves him as a loyal friend. Domesticated dogs vary in their breeds, each of which has its function for humans; some of them are used for guarding, some are used for hunting, some are used for tracking odors and are used by police agencies, some are used for herding sheep and livestock, some are used to drag sleds in polar regions, and some are dogs for decoration and entertainment only. Dogs need special care and attention, especially small-sized dogs.
The dog has not considered a separate species of living organisms, it is – in taxonomy – just a breed of the gray wolf, and the reason for taking its current form and shape is that ancient man succeeded in domesticating and breeding it to serve his purposes some time ago 32,100 to 18,200 years ago. Dogs have accompanied man since then, gradually changing their shape depending on the different natural conditions around them, the most important of these reasons is the difference in the climate in which they live, the nature of the food served to them, and the lifestyle to which they are accustomed. As for the numerous dog breeds that exist today, numbering hundreds, differing in their colors and bodies are the result of hybridization and artificial selection carried out by man after that, many of these breeds are not adapted to life in the wild and will never be able to live in it.
Dog food :
Types of dog food vary depending on their state of Health, and the preference of their breeder, and also differ in their prices, method of purchase, and preparation. In general, they can be classified as follows:
Dry food (ground):
Dry dog food has the advantage that its prices are lower than other types, and it can also be kept without refrigeration for long periods. It also has many benefits for the dog; it helps to maintain the dog’s teeth, and keep them healthy in good condition; it is easy to chew, which limits the formation of harmful deposits that collect on the dog’s teeth. And it is advisable to read the ingredients of this food before buying it, choosing the most useful for the dog.
Wet food (canned):
Although this type of dog food is available in shops and grocery stores, it is considered expensive compared to other types of dog food. Canned wet food has a long shelf life, which makes it a good option for dog breeders to buy and feed to their dogs. There are many commercial varieties of canned food, but not all of them contain the necessary and useful protein for dogs, as some of them contain types of protein that are not digestible, so they enter and exit the dog’s body without its digestive system being able to break it down into absorbable substances, so the dog does not benefit from it anything. It is noteworthy that many varieties of wet food (canned) consist mostly of water (75%); the high percentage of water in this food is at the expense of nutrients for the liver, which makes it – that is, the dog – needs a larger amount of food, and for this reason, it is recommended that the dog breeder read the ingredients of the item and make sure of them before buying it.
It is a food similar in shape to burgers and various pieces of meat, and it is not considered one of the types of food that can be relied on completely in the dog’s diet, it is used from time to time in feeding the dog to make it enjoy its delicious taste resulting from processed materials, and flavorings that are added to it.
It is the food that dog breeders are keen to prepare for their dogs at home, they spend money, spend effort, and time, to be confident in the quality of the food their dogs eat. In this case, it is necessary for the dog owner to conduct adequate research, and the necessary consultation, to make sure that this food contains all the food that the dog needs from food.
It is fresh, raw, uncooked meat, which is served to the dog along with the bones (and other organs) that are with him; bones are a rich source of phosphorus and calcium, substances that the dog needs. Because dogs have relatively short intestines, and strong intestinal acids, and therefore have a great ability to digest raw food and bones, this type of food is suitable for many of its species.
It is food that is purchased or prepared after consulting a veterinarian. This type of food is relied upon if the dog suffers from a pathological condition, or from a certain allergy, so his breeder must consult a competent veterinarian to find out the right food for his dog.
The dog needs other types of food and food in order to grow well and have good health. Green peas can be fed to the dog; they are a good source of protein and vitamins, and dogs need these nutrients so that their body can perform the necessary vital functions and build muscles. Dogs can also benefit from many other vegetables, such as broccoli, pumpkin, and carrots. It is also possible to feed the dog sweet potatoes and chicken, without adding salt or fat to them, as there is no need to put any spices or additives on them.
Domestic dogs can also be fed boiled eggs, as well as a small number of fruits, such as apple slices, with caution that they are free of seeds because they may be toxic to the dog because they contain a small percentage of cyanide. Pistachios and unsalted peanut butter are two types of food that are useful for dogs, as they contain a high percentage of protein and important nutrients for his health such as fats, however, they should only be given to him in small quantities, and caution should be exercised – in the case of peanut butter – from containing xylitol (in English: Xylitol) for its toxic effects on the dog. Yogurt and cheese are considered good foods for dogs because of their calcium, protein, and nutrients.
Foods to avoid for dogs :
As for the foods that should be avoided be offered to the dog so as not to get hurt or poisoned, they are varied, the most important of which are the following:
For garlic and onions: you should not feed the dog these fruits at all, because they contain toxic and harmful substances that his digestive system cannot get rid of, and because they can cause serious damage to his red blood cells.
Grapes: grapes and even dried ones (raisins) should be avoided; because they are toxic to the dog, they can cause kidney failure.
Chocolate: it is necessary to avoid it, especially white ones, as well as cocoa of all kinds and its products; it contains a substance called methylxanthine, which causes diarrhea, vomiting, and an increase in heart rate in dogs.
Caffeine: any type of beverage that contains caffeine, such as tea, coffee, and others; they may lead to exposing the dog to a heart attack.
Alcohol: any consumption of alcohol for a dog, even in a very small amount, will cause him serious poisoning directly.
Sugar: you should try to avoid sugar as much as possible in all its types, whether industrial or even natural, and all the products in which it is available in a large proportion, such as soft drinks, fatty sweets, and so on, as these lead to failure in the dog’s organs.
Dog breeding :
Dogs are the best friend of man, they are loyal animals to their owner, and they work to protect him, accompany him and provide many services to him, and in turn, a person must be loyal to his dog and take good care of him and his health, and one of the images of caring for dogs is taking care of their food and drink; contrary to what is believed, dogs cannot eat from all types of food that humans eat; he does not have the same physical structure of a human and his digestive system is different from the human digestive system, as there are some types of food that he cannot digest, including what is toxic to him.
